It can be confusing, but here is how immigrating to Canada as a healthcare worker works.

Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)—This is the federal department in charge of immigration, the Canadian counterpart to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services.

The Express Entry route is a work-based program for skilled workers, and Ontario works with the federal government through the Ontario Immigration Nominee Program (ONIP).

There are nine streams to ONIP; there’s a handy tool to check which one best applies! As a healthcare worker, you’ll likely be directed towards the Employer Job Offer: Foreign Worker stream. To qualify, you must have a job offer in Ontario from an employer that meets certain requirements.

If you missed out on step 2, Get a Job, back ya go. (Psst, maybe not you, physicians.)

If you got that part done, and you’re getting your documents together, head on to step 4!
